As mm hi as it was possible, an Extra was it-sued at ( Vntralia, ami the whole neigh boring country placed on the alert to watch for the balloon and children. Saturday morning at daybreak, a fanner near New Carthage, forty three miles dis. taut from Mr. Harvey's place, discovered the balloon suspended in the air, attached by the grappling mpe to a tree in his yard. Davidson College: We are indent ed to a friend for the Catalogue of David son College for the year 1857-58. From it we make some statements. Davidson College is situated on the riauk Road leading from Charlotte to Statesville, twenty miles from the former, and is thus rendered easy of access to per sons cuuiinir from any portion of the coun try, lyias Kaat, South East, and South West of St-tesville. It is surrounded by population substantial, intelligent, and tbey were relieved. The story the girl told was that as the balloon ascended .-hj cried pitcously to her father to pull it djwu. The flames passrd so closely upon them, that many jumped into the sea, relatives clasped in each others arms leaped over and met a watery grave; two girls, sup posed to be sisters jumped over and sunk kissing each other. A missionary and wife leaped into the sea together, and the j stew.rdess and assistant steward arm in arm followed. Tbey afterwards bailed her out with life preservers cut in too, aud pulled to the Mturice, having picked up two or three passengers before reaching the bark. Altogether there were sixty seven souls taken into the Maurice during the night. A Norwegian bark came up with .the steamer the next morning and a boat was observed going around the burning ship: They niny have picked up a few persons, but only a very few. The Maurice had no communication with the Norwegian. At about 7 o'clock the Maurice sailed for Fayal to deposit the rescued passengers. At about 2 o'clock the same afternoon, she fell in with tho bark Lotus, Capt, Trefy, of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, from Liverpool for Halifax. As I was anxious to get on British territory, Capt. Ho was also anx ious to take'all the American citizens, but there was such a rush of foreigners into j the boats that only one load of eleven j could be got off, and even several of these j were foreigners!. At five minutes past ten he entered the oirttiibus, surrounded by a volunteer guard. The prisoner, in passing from the jail to ;1ie Ferry, Vowed to many of his former friends, and appeared to be the calmest individual in the company. At 35 minutes past 10, the prisoner ascended tbc gallows with a firm step, and took his seat, accompanied by tho sheriff aud the clergy. He addressed the crowd in a short speech, in which he charged his misfortunes to the use of liquor, and said many who were there present had tlie i beard him preach, and be hoped they ! would take heed to this, Ins last sermon'. He said he freely forgave all who had cllended nun, and no noped toe same clemency would be extended to him. Me said he had made a confession, in which be had told all of his sins that he could recollect; some be could not recollect, as so many had been committed when un der the influence of liquor. We do not pretend to give his precise words, but only a brief synopsis. Ho spoke about three fourths of an hour. After speaking, he requested that "Jerusalem my happy home," might be sung; he said that many present had sung it with hint on more happy occasions. Ho started the tune himself. While singing, he called his aged father on the platform, throw himself upon his neck, interrupted the singing only long enongh to say "Farewell," and then continued to take the lead. His mother, with his little daughter, came forward at his request, and he shook hands with her, and took bis little one in his arms, kissed it, and all without seeming to be interrupted. So, also, with a brother. They all left the ground before he fell. He also, while singing, nhook hands with some twentv others. Among them, two of the broth ers of his murdered wife. He had a smile on his face most of the time. There were but few dry eye on the ground during this .scene. When they ceased singing about and said, "Sheriff, I a die." He then took bis station unoti the platform, and when tho fatal rope was fixed about his neck, the fortitude of his spirit did not seem to falter, although his body quailed. Over sixty thousand copies have been sold of a single work by the authoress, which extraordinary suecess, we take it, is somewhat indicative of the popularity which must attend the new effort. In the course of the story, the scene is transferred to the Indi:.n settlements in the northern part of Pennsylvania, and the author has been wonderfully success ful in delineating the aboriginal charac ter. The plot is simple, but vigorous, and the stirring scenes of the t'nie has enabled her to infuse much dramatic in tensity into the story during its develope ment.
